  • Weed barrier — a fabric layer over the graded subgrade.
  • Compacted aggregate base, built in lifts — crushed rock (Class II road base or ¾" minus) laid and mechanically compacted with a plate compactor, a few inches at a time so each layer locks before the next goes on. For residential lawns, installers across the industry build roughly 2–4 inches of compacted base, with Arizona crews commonly at the 3–4 inch end; pet runs, putting greens, and lots with drainage problems go deeper. A base measured in fractions of an inch isn’t a thinner version of the same install; it’s a different, shorter-lived product that can ripple within a season.
  • Setting layer — a finer decomposed-granite or quarter-minus layer screeded smooth on top of the structural base, graded to slope water away from the house.
  • Turf, seams, and infill — the turf laid with the blade nap running one direction, seams properly joined, perimeter secured, and infill brushed down to weight the blades.

Why the shortcut version exists

Every corner cut in that list saves money you can’t see on the day the job finishes. A base compacted in one pass instead of lifts, an inch of rock instead of three, native dirt left in place of aggregate — the lawn looks identical for the first few months. The bill for those savings arrives in year two, as low spots, drainage failures, and lifting edges, long after the crew is gone. This is why the cheapest bid and the most expensive bid can describe the same visible product and mean completely different things.

What Arizona ground does to a base

  • Caliche — the West Valley’s cemented calcium-carbonate layer sheds water instead of draining it. A proper install digs past it so the base can drain; a base built on top of caliche traps water under the turf.
  • Monsoon drainage — a yard that handles a July downpour is a yard whose base and slope were designed for it. Drainage is planned before the turf goes down, because retrofitting it means pulling the turf back up.
  • Heat cycling — desert surface temperatures swing hard between day and night, and a base that shifts with that cycling telegraphs into the surface above. Compaction quality is what resists it.

Turf over flood-irrigated lots

Parts of Buckeye, Goodyear, and Avondale sit on flood irrigation, delivered by the Roosevelt Irrigation District or, in parts of Buckeye, the Buckeye Water Conservation & Drainage District. A flood-irrigated yard is engineered to hold and spread standing water — which is the opposite of what a turf base needs. That makes two questions genuinely open, and we won’t paper over them with a generic answer:

  • Can turf be built over a flood-irrigated lot, and what base design does it need? This depends on your specific lot and district, and it’s a question for your irrigation district and an installer who has actually done it in your area.
  • Does the irrigation assessment continue after you convert? Whether you keep paying the flood-irrigation charge once the grass is gone is a question only your district can answer.

If your lot is flood-irrigated, call your irrigation district before you commit to an install. An installer who waves off flood irrigation as a non-issue is telling you they haven’t dealt with it.

How to check the base is being done right

You don’t have to watch every lift go down. Ask these before work starts:

  • How deep is the compacted base, and how many lifts? (A single pass or a sub-inch base is a flag.)
  • What aggregate — road base or ¾" minus for structure, a finer setting layer on top?
  • How is the slope graded, and where does water go in a monsoon?
  • On caliche or a flood-irrigated lot, how does the base design change?
